Rustic Halloween Sign

Create this cute rustic Halloween sign in no time with just a few supplies! An easy Halloween craft that fits into any Halloween decor for a not-too-spooky touch!

Rustic Halloween sign. Wooden Halloween sign with Boo in the middle.

While I do enjoy Halloween, I’m not really into the scary aspects of the holiday.  I’m more of a pumpkin patch, cute kids’ costumes, and Halloween chocolate kind of girl.  So when I was thinking of what I was going to create for this hop, I knew I wanted something that would be Halloweenish while still fitting in with the rest of my fall decor {you can see more of that over on Instagram}.  And so, my rustic Halloween sign was born…

Rustic Halloween Sign DIY Tutorial

This is a pretty easy and inexpensive project and I love how simple it is.  Hopefully you don’t find the “Boo” too scary. 😉

Materials

  • Wooden garden stakes cut down to the length of your sign {I used 10} plus 2 stakes cut down to the width of your sign.
  • Wood Stain {mine is Dark Walnut}
  • 3/4 inch Wood Screws
  • White and Orange acrylic paint
  • Orange Pom Pom Ribbon
  • vinyl outline or stencil for BOO {you could always free hand this too}

Directions

  • Cut down your garden stakes to the desired shape and size.  Lightly sand down all edges.

  • Apply the wood stain using a brush and wipe off excess with an old rag.  Allow to dry.  Use a sanding block to distress edges and any other areas that you would like a more weathered look.
  • Lay out your garden stakes and use wood screws to attach each piece to a cross strip on the back of your sign.  Do one cross strip towards the top of the sign and one strip across the bottom of the sign.

  • Now that your basic sign is done, you just need to choose what design you are going to do.  I used a large plate, traced out the circle, and hand painted it with white paint.  For the letters, I cut out a vinyl stencil with my Silhouette and painted it in with orange paint using a foam brush.  Once the paint had dried, I gave everything a sanding for a more rustic look.

  • Finally I added some cute pom pom ribbon and my son decided that it also needed a little spider. That’s about as scary as I get. 😉

I think it fits in pretty well with my other non-spooky Halloween items!  My little owl and ruffled pumpkin are happy to have some company!

    I just found this and want to do it for Halloween… Where did you get the stakes, and what size are they?

    So cute!

    Thanks!

      They’re just garden stakes (or 1x2s) that you can pick up at any home supply store (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.). If you know your measurements, they might even cut them for you! 🙂
