Going a Little Batty

I have been having so much fun lately working on my Halloween projects. I am now just finishing up a few odds and ends but am pretty much done with the decorating. My little spider friends that I made last week needed some new buddies so I came up with these bats. I was originally planning to hang them with fishing line but they seem to have found some great resting places around the house.

If you would like to make your own little batty friends, here’s what you need:
-small styrofoam balls
-black yarn (I used the fuzzy stuff)
-black foam
-glitter (if you would like a little bling on the wings!)
-black pipe cleaners
-glue (clear drying)
-buttons
-white cardstock to cut out the fangs

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Wrap the yarn around a styrofoam ball until it is completely covered.

2. Draw out a bat wing on a scrap piece of paper and cut it out to use as your pattern.

3. Using your pattern cut out two wings from the foam.  These will be the front of the wings.  Then turn your pattern over and cut out two more wings for the back of the wings.

4. If you would like to add glitter, put a light coat of clear drying glue over the foam wings and sprinkle on the glitter.  Make sure you have a plate or something handy so you can shake off the loose glitter and re-use it!Depending on where you will be displaying your bat, you may only need to add the glitter to the front wings.

5.  Cut a pipe cleaner in half.  Insert one into each side of the styrofaom ball.  This will be where you attach the wings.

6. Now grab back your wings (make sure you have a front wing and a back wing).  Glue the backsides of the wings and sandwich the pipe cleaner between them.

7. Now just add buttons for the eyes and cut out a couple of small trianges for the fangs.  Let your bats roam around the house to find a nice resting spot.  If you would like to hang them, just attach some fishing line.

Hopefully that all makes sense.  Let me know if you have any questions!  Stay tuned for the rest of the fall and Halloween festivities!
