Spring Home Tour

Spring is officially here and, unfortunately, so is the rain!  But just because it is dark and gloomy outside, doesn’t mean we can’t have some sunshine on the inside.  Today I am joining in with Shades of Blue Interiors and 15 other talented home decor bloggers to share our spring home tours with you. You can find all of the links at the end of the post – I know you will love them so don’t miss out!

Beautiful spring home tour with lots of simple decor ideas to decorate your home for spring!

For those of you that are visiting for the first time, I am so happy that you are here.  And for all of my old friends, welcome back!  Last week I showed you our spring and Easter dining room as well as a little spring vignette {and free printable} that I put together in our hallway.  Today I am going to give you a quick spring home tour of our kitchen and family room.

I love this time of year because fresh flowers are everywhere and they are such an inexpensive way to add some spring decor to your home.  While I love the beautiful bouquets, I tend to stick more with the potted flowers since they last longer and can be put into so many cute containers. 🙂

Beautiful spring home tour with lots of simple decor ideas to decorate your home for spring!I picked these wooden market crates up in NYC from H&M.  It was my first time getting to visit one of their stores that had home goods and I was pretty much in love.  Unfortunately, my suitcase was only so big.

I also picked up a couple of potted hydrangeas, one of my favorite blooms.  With two boys, I don’t get a chance to put out a lot of pink but I if I can find an excuse to use it, I do!

Kitchen Spring Home TourI am hoping to re-pot these to terra cotta pots once they have finished blooming and transition them outside for the summer.  I’m not sure if I will keep them in the pots or see if I can manage to keep them alive to add to our garden.  Our climate is pretty good for hydrangeas so we will see how it goes!  For now, I am just trying to keep my little hydrangeas happy in the house and you can find my tips for maintaining potted hydrangeas at the end of the tour.

My kitchen chalkboard is always one of my favorite things to decorate each season.  I loved my mini bunny bunting so much from last year that I had to bring it back.

Those little twine pom pom tails get me every time! 🙂

We have an open floor plan and our kitchen is open to our main living room.  This room is still a bit of a work in progress – I’ve kind of been in a decorating stand still for a couple of years but am hoping to get things finished this year.

Living Room Spring Home Tour

I added a mix of fresh and faux greenery and a few other spring touches to our regular decor.

I also temporarily potted one of the hydrangeas into a cleaning bucket that I had.  I guess the spring cleaning will just have to wait a little bit longer!  The wood stand is actually a planter that I just turned upside down.

Tips for Maintaining A Potted Hydrangea

  • Place your hydrangea plant in an area that it will receive a good amount of natural morning light but is not exposed to direct afternoon sun.
  • Water your hydrangea daily when it is in bloom.  The soil should be evenly moist but not really wet.  Mist the blooms with cool water. Note that the hydrangeas will require much less water once they finish blooming.
  • Hydrangeas prefer cooler temperatures – they are actually best around 50-60 degrees – although I actually have them a little warmer when they are in the house and they have been fine.
  • To keep your potted hydrangea after it blooms, cut each branch back several inches.  Select a pot for the hydrangea that measures approximately 2-4 inches deeper and wider than the original plastic pot and ensure that there are drainage holes.  Use bagged potting mix with a slow release fertilizer.
  • When you are watering your planted hydrangeas, fill the pot to the rim and then let it drain out through the drainage holes.  Repeat for a thorough watering.  Ensure that they do not dry out during the growing season.
  • You want to keep your hydrangeas outside as long as possible, however, during the winter months {or whenever the frost starts}, bring the entire container into your garage or cool basement and cover with a light mulch.  Water lightly throughout the winter.

I saw a potted hydrangea for sale the other day and paused for a moment, but now you’ve got me thinking I could really use one! I never buy cut flowers so I can treat myself to some flowering plants now and then right? My orchid is now in full bloom again, and I have a pot of blooming amaryllis bulbls, so wonderful to have pots of real flowers indoors! Thanks for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!

I don’t think it had a particular name but they are marble subway tiles that I purchased at Home Depot. Hope that helps!

It’s from Decor Steals and came in a set of two. They’re super versatile and I’ve used them outside during the summer and in almost every main room of our home at one time or another! I got mine a while ago but I see them pop up every couple of months or so or check out the extended steals. 🙂
