Slow Cooker Apple Pie Oatmeal

I love a hot breakfast on these colder fall days but mornings around here are always on the chaotic side!  I have been trying to make sure that I fit time in to actually eat breakfast in the morning and this slow cooker oatmeal is perfect!  Quickly prepare it the night before, and it is ready and waiting for you in the morning.   And as an added bonus, it makes your kitchen smell lovely! 🙂

Prepare this slow cooker oatmeal the night before and it is all ready to go when you wake up in the morning.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups chopped or sliced apples {peeled and cored} – I used 3 medium apples for this {with a few slices left over}
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups of old fashioned or steel cut oats {NOTE: The photos in this post were taken using old fashioned oats but I have made it a few more times with the steel cut outs.  If you don’t like it mushy, use the steel cut oats.  They tend to stand up much better to the cooking time.}
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg or apple pie spice
  • toppings {optional}: chopped walnuts, fresh apple slices, cinnamon and brown sugar

Prepare this slow cooker oatmeal the night before and it is all ready to go for you in the morning. Quick and delicious!

To Make

  • Spray the inside of the slow cooker with cooking spray or coat with butter.
  • Place all ingredients {except the toppings!} in your slow cooker and stir.
  • Cook on low for approximately 7 hours.  The edges of mine were slightly crispy but that was actually my favorite part.  If you have a timer on your slow cooker and don’t like the crispy edges, you may want to set it to 6 hours for the first time that you make this.  {I also like this idea from The Yummy Life to create a double boiler in your slow cooker with a heat proof bowl and water}.
  • Stir oatmeal before serving.  Top with sliced apples, a sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar and chopped nuts {flax seed also tastes good}  This oatmeal is fairly thick so you can always add a little extra milk as well if you like.
  • Leftovers may be refrigerated.  To reheat, place a single serving into a bowl ad add a couple of tablespoons of milk. Microwave on high for 1 minute.  Stir and add a little more milk if needed.  Heat for another 30-60 seconds until hot.

Prepare this slow cooker oatmeal the night before and it is all ready to go for you in the morning. Quick and delicious!

My kind of breakfast…hot, yummy, and quick!

    Jenn, my little girl and I eat soaked overnight oats almost every morning for breakfast with bananas. This hot variation with apples sounds like the perfect change for our morning eats. Pinning! Thank you so much for sharing. Yum!

      I keep meaning to try the soaked oats. I’ll have to give that a try too!

    Sorry to say that this did not come out good out all! I followed the directions so I’m not sure where it went wrong. It did crisp around the edges which I didn’t mind but the oatmeal itself was pretty tasteless and mushy (alsmot slimy) and I was only able to salvage it with adding a bunch of toppings. Did not save the leftovers and will not be making again.

      Sorry it didn’t work out for you Danielle. Mine was a little mushy too {but that’s how I like mine} – definitely not slimy though! 😉 I do usually add a little extra brown sugar on top for extra flavoring. I know slow cookers can vary in terms of cooking time – if you like your oatmeal firmer, you could try cutting down the cooking time until they are the firmness you like.

        One more thing too – not sure what kind of oats you used but the steel oats hold up MUCH better and are a lot less mushy.
