This delicious frozen hot chocolate recipe will become a summer favorite!  Thick, creamy, chocolatey and oh so good!

Frozen hot chocolate recipe topped with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles.

We’ve had some amazing weather this summer and I’ve been enjoying every minute of it!  The only down side is that our house does not have air conditioning and pretty much turns into a sauna as soon as the warm weather hits. During the heat waves, it is not uncommon for our bedrooms to get up to 95 degrees and our main floor is not much better {thank goodness we have a basement that stays nice and cool!}

Frozen Hot Chocolate Drink

One of our favorite ways to cool down is with a nice cold drink and this frozen hot chocolate recipe is one of the most requested.  It’s rich, thick, and creamy, and the perfect way to refresh on a hot summer day!  Using a high quality chocolate {and to a certain extent hot chocolate powder} is definitely worth the splurge.  Especially if you’re a chocolate snob like me!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings 2 people

Ingredients

  • chocolate sauce to top {optional}
  • 3 ounces high quality chocolate {85 grams}
  • 2 tsp hot chocolate powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup vanilla or chocolate ice cream
  • 3 cups ice cubes
  • whipped cream
  • chocolate shavings
  • chocolate sauce

Instructions

  1. Melt chocolate in the microwave on LOW {or defrost.  It's very important that you don't overcook the chocolate.  Start with one minute, stir, and then continue in 30 second intervals, stirring well in between

  2. Mix in the hot chocolate and sugar. Stir until well blended. Add ½ cup milk and stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature.
  3. In a blender, combine ice, milk, ice cream, and chocolate mixture {NOTE: If you don't have a powerful blender, you'll likely need to dislodge the ice cubes frequently until they start to become crushed}. Blend until smooth.

  4. Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings or chocolate sauce.
