Are you excited for the start of fall? I’m always torn at this time of year between holding on to the last moments of summer and dreaming about those beautiful fall days ahead. Working on fall projects, however, definitely makes me look forward to the start of a new season and all of the fall favorites that it brings. Over the past week or so, I’ve been adding a few fall touches to our home to get that fall inspiration flowing. I have tons of fall ideas to share with you over the next couple of months, so let’s get started!

Fall Simplicity Series.

To kick things off, we’ve put together some beautiful fall DIY and craft projects to inspire you for the upcoming season.  You can find all of the awesome ideas at the end of the post, so be sure to check them out before you go!

DIY Fall Centerpiece Terrarium Tutorial

Are you ready to get going on some fall DIY projects? This fall centerpiece terrarium can be put together in about 15 minutes and can totally be customized with all of your fall favorites!

Materials

  • terrarium {similar ones HERE, HERE, and HERE} You can even just use a large dough bowl, smaller terrarium, or other container that you already have.
  • preserved spanish moss or other filler
  • cork “wood” chips {I got these at our local garden store but you could use any wood chips from outside or other natural elements that add a little more texture.}
  • faux or real pumpkins
  • wheat or other favorite fall finds
  • battery-operated twinkle lights {TIP: look for ones that have an automatic timer so they’ll go on automatically each evening as well as a wire string so that it can be bent and shaped. I also really like the warm lights over the cool lights.}
  • faux leaves
  • wired fall garland {optional}. The wire allows you to bend and shape the garland so you can fill in any bare spots.

Directions

  • Fill the bottom of your terrarium or bowl with the filler of your choice.

  • Add a few of your favorite fall finds starting with the larger objects. Try faux pumpkins with different textures, real pumpkins, wheat bundles, cotton stems, etc. Look for objects of various heights and sizes for more interest. If you need to add a little extra height, you could add a small pie plate or other stand under one of your objects. If your terrarium will be viewed from both the front and the back, make sure your display looks good from both sides. You can’t see it from this photo, but there is another pumpkin in behind the wheat to add interest when viewed from the other side.

  • Fill in bare spots with cork wood chips, small fall leaves, small branches, or fall berries. I used a few fall leaves that had fallen off of my fall garlands – it’s a great way to use up those bits that you would just throw out!

  • Add in the wired garland and twinkle lights to fill in any gaps. Shape it so the lights are distributed evenly. Tuck in the battery pack for the lights under one the pumpkins.

I couldn’t get any good photos that show the lights, but I promise that it looks really pretty at night! I might even add one more string.

The terrarium would look cute in any fall vignette but I used it for a fall centerpiece in our dining room. I haven’t finished decorating in there yet, but it goes well with the mixed metallics that I’m planning on using.  Not a bad start!

The best thing about using a terrarium to decorate is that it can easily be changed up each season for a brand new look! Is it bad that I’m already thinking about how to decorate it for Christmas? 😉

    HI Jenn!
    I love this post. Okay, where did you find the Mom Baking sign in the background? I love that! And, that hutch is beautiful. Did you paint it? I have repainted a hutch 3 times! ha!

      Thanks! The baking sign is from Decor Steals. It’s a daily deal site so you have to keep your eyes open for it to come up. I did paint the hutch with Annie Sloan graphite. You definitely have a lot more painting patience than I do – one time was more than enough for me. Even if I grow to hate the color, I don’t know if I have it in me to paint it again. lol!
