Creating a cozy Christmas home involves all of the senses – including the sense of smell! Christmas baking, warm spices such as cinnamon and cloves, and mandarin oranges all remind me of Christmas and are combined in this delicious smelling Christmas simmering potpourri.

Christmas Simmering Potpourri Recipe

This Christmas simmering potpourri recipe has all of the delicious scents of Christmas! It will make your home smell heavenly without any chemicals are harsh scents. I have given approximate measurements but you can really do any combination you would like. There’s really no right or wrong!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 an orange, cut or sliced
  • 1/2 a lemon, cut or sliced
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3 tbsp. whole cloves

Christmas simmering potpourri.

Instructions

  • Combine all of the ingredients with water in a sauce pan and bring to a boil.  Alternatively, you can add cranberry juice or apple juice instead of the water for a little variation of scent.  A few drops of vanilla also smells great! Reduce heat and simmer as long as desired.  Add additional water as needed to prevent the mixture from drying up.
  • When done, this can be stored in an air tight container in the refrigerator and used again for up to a week. Just continue to add liquid as needed to simmer.

Christmas Gift Idea

Simmering potpourri makes a quick and easy gift idea for teachers, friends, or a hostess gift and looks so cute all packaged up.  I used some red berry crates for mine  but a mason jar, Christmas tin from the dollar store, or even a plastic sandwich bag would also work.  Just add a lemon, an orange, and double the dry ingredients from the recipe above {so they will actually be able to make it twice}.

To package the potpourri up, just add everything to the berry basket {or whatever container you would like} and wrap it in clear celophane. Print out the gift tag {see below} and write out the recipe instructions on the back of the tag {instructing them to use half the orange, half the lemon, and half of the dry ingredients}. Attach it to your basket or mason jar with baker’s twine and a couple of jingle bells.  Easy-peasy!

Christmas Gift Tag

This Christmas gift tag can be added to any Christmas gift that appeals to the sense of smell – Christmas candles, lotions or soaps, and of course, this Christmas simmer potpourri recipe!

Just download it and print the tags out on white cardstock. You can either use them as above or cut out the circle shape as I did.  If you are going to be using a circle punch to cut out the circle, a 3 inch punch works perfectly if you print it out as a full page {not an 8×10}.
