I am happy to be partnering with BEHR for this post.  As always, all opinions are 100% my own.

Pretty rustic Christmas hanging baskets with fresh greenery.Today I am joining the rest of the BEHR Ambassador team to bring you some outdoor holiday inspiration!  You can find all of the projects {as well as an awesome giveaway for 3 gallons of BEHR paint!} at the end of the post, so don’t forget to check it all out before you go.

Outdoor Christmas decor projects.

There is nothing like the wonderful scent of pine, fir, and other fresh greenery at Christmas time.  Although we no longer cut down a real tree, I still head out to the Christmas tree farm to pick up some greenery for other aspects of our decor.  I made a fresh Christmas swag for our front door a few weeks ago and today I am going to show you these simple Christmas hanging baskets.

MATERIALS

  • Old wooden planter or other wooden crate.
  • BEHR Forbidden Red -PPU1-10 {NOTE: On my computer, the color on the website does not look like it does in real life.  The color in these photos is pretty representative of the true color}
  • foam block {optional}
  • soil
  • various Christmas greenery {I used pine, fir and cedar}
  • berry stems
  • pinecones or other embellishments
  • chalkboard vinyl
  • chalk pen
  • glue

DIRECTIONS

  • Find an old wooden planter or other wooden box or crate.  Remove the wire.

  • Paint your box using BEHR Forbidden Red.  Allow to dry.  I painted down a couple of inches into the box but left the rest of the inside unpainted since you won’t be able to see it.

  • Place a foam block or florist foam in the bottom of the planter. If you are going to be creating a hanging basket, add the wire back in at this time.

  •  Start by adding a tall piece of sturdy greenery {the fir worked well for this} into the middle of your planter securing it down into the foam.  Top with soil. Continue layering a few other pieces of greenery around this keeping each side fairly symmetrical and pressing the heavier pieces down into the foam.  You will likely need to trim off some of the greenery towards the end of the branch

  • Continue to add layers of greenery until you have your desired fullness.  Add a few twigs of berries and any other embellishments that you would like.

  • Cut some chalkboard vinyl to your desired size and add whatever saying or design you would like using a chalk pen {this will hold up to the elements better than chalk if you will be leaving your basket outside}.  I found that the vinyl stuck well on its own for a few days until we had a massive wind storm. I then decided that I would just add a little glue to secure it. 🙂

I will show you the rest of the porch next week, but here is a little sneak peek for you with the hanging baskets up.

    I love the way you filled it with a mix of greens and Christmas decor. I just threw a ton of greens into our window boxes, but I know I need to make it look a little more put together. Thanks for sharing. Super cute and festive project.

    I have red hanging baskets I was given last year with hanging cherry tomato plants in them. I am now wondering why I didn’t think to pop some greenery in them for Christmas, this looks so lovely. Thanks for the inspiration!
