CHRISTMAS HOME TOURS

Welcome to the next room of our Christmas home tour! I’ve shown you our Christmas kitchen and Christmas living room, and today I’m sharing our festive dining room Christmas decor.

A big thank-you to Marty from A Stroll Thru Life for organizing this amazing Christmas home tour! This week, 26 bloggers are opening up their homes and sharing all of their Christmas inspiration and ideas with you. You can find all of the links at the end of the post, so be sure to check them out for more Christmas decor tips.

If you’re coming over from Decor to Adore, I’m so glad you were able to stop by. Laura always has the most nostalgic Christmas home tours with so many unique touches!

Our Christmas Dining Room – Using Green, White, and Amber

Today, I’m going to be showing you around our Christmas dining room. This year I stayed with more neutral colors with ambers and metallic touches.  It’s definitely a bit of a change from the more festive red and white Christmas decor, but I love the calm and cozy vibe that it creates.

Our dining room is the first room you see when you enter our front door, and it’s probably my favorite room to decorate for the seasons. While we don’t actually eat dinner in here very often, we’re always in the room and will have at least a few special holiday meals in here. I also use this room as my secret place to store all of my sweet treats and chocolates as there are lots of little places to stash them that the kids don’t find! lol!

Christmas Dining Room Decor Tips

If you’re looking for some Christmas decor inspiration for your own home, I thought I would share the process I go through when I decorate the space. There are definitely no hard and fast rules when it comes to Christmas decorating, but hopefully this will give you a bit of a starting point if you’re stuck {or just looking for some new ideas!}.

CHOOSE A COLOR SCHEME.

I’m always torn between the pretty netural Christmas decor and the more traditional red and white colors. Choosing a color scheme really helps me to narrow down what items I want to use in the space. This year, I wanted to create a more peaceful and relaxing space, so I went with greens and ambers and then added in other metallic touches.

Pick a Theme or Inspiration Piece.

I also find it helpful to have some kind of theme or inspiration piece that I base the room on. From this you can draw on colors, textures, and complimentary decor ides for the space.  For our dining room this year, I actually drew inspiration from two items that I used last year in our dining room – my DIY felt gingerbread man garland and this DIY amber centerpiece.

DIY faux gingerbread snowflake ornaments.

While I didn’t use the gingerbread garland in the space {it’s up in one of the kids’ rooms this year}, it did inspire this little gingerbread sideboard.  These snowflakes are faux gingerbread ornaments that I made and I think they turned out so cute! They were super easy to make and I get a nice whiff of cinnamon whenever I walk by them.

I found this sweet gingerbread man cutting board at Homesense and stacked him up behind these Christmas house cookie jars that I got at Target a few years ago.

Put together a Centerpiece.

I really loved the Christmas centerpiece I did last year with the amber glass, so I did a little variation of it this year.

Instead of the round tray, I used a longer cutting board as the base and added a couple more bottles. I like to keep my centerpieces on some kind of cutting board or tray so it can easily be removed from the table if needed.

Even during the day, the bottles have such a pretty glow when the daylight hits them. The dried oranges are from a few years ago and now have more of a rich amber color. I used these throughout the room to tie in the amber and also have some amber glasses on our beverage tray.

The best part though is always the pretty night glow!

Display Seasonal Artwork

Printables are one of the easiest ways to switch up your holiday decor and you can find many free Christmas printables to download online. If you like to use printables for the different seasons, just keep all of the prints in one frame and swap them around as the seasons change. I created some new Christmas tree printables {that I’ll be sharing with you soon!} for our dining room and kitchen table area this year.

Add a tree.

There’s no better way to make your space feel like Christmas than adding a tree! It doesn’t have to be a full size tree – even a little tabletop tree or smaller floor tree will add that Christmas magic!

I used lots of different metallic and white ornaments on the tree along with these DIY dried oranments that I made.

Try to put the oranges right by a light as they have such a pretty glow!

I always like to do a little decor under the tree as well. Those little Christmas mice are a favorite of mine and actually have one in almost every room that I decorated for Christmas.

There’s nothing better than eating dinner under the light of a Christmas tree!

Create a beverage bar.

I usually have a hot chocolate bar set up in our dining room, but we have it on a cart in our living room this year. I do still have our little beverage stand and mug ladder in the corner of the dining room though.

It’s perfect for a Christmas punch or cocktail and the extra glasses are just stored in the buffet beside it.

LIght it up!

By far, the very best part of Christmas decor is all of the lights! In addition to the tree lights, you can add candles, string lights, or other strands of Christmas lights throughout the space.

I really don’t think you can ever have too many Christmas lights!

For plug-in lights I like to use a smart plug so I can just turn them on and off from my phone. They’re so much easier than digging in behind the tree!

For our battery-operated lights and candles, I try to stick with ones that have a timer, so you just have to set them once and forget about them. Most stay on for 5-6 hours and work on a 24 hour timer. I have mine set so they come on around 4:30 each night just as it gets dark.

I’m not sure why the lights feel so magical, but it definitely brings that Christmas spirit!

I love it all. I especially love all the lights and our gorgeous photos of them glowing in the evening. So magical. Your soft amber colors are perfect, they add so much warmth to the entire room. The corner beverage area is always a favorite and when it is lit up it is truly stunning. So much inspiration and so much to see. Thanks so much for joining the tour again this season, I love how you decorate your home.

I had to show my husband one of your photos of your dining room light fixture. We have the same one over our dining table and I did something similar to yours last year and repeated it this year. I have a lot of beautiful glass ornaments that I’ve not used in years due to two cats, a dog and a game we’ve been playing for years now….the great Christmas tree pickle hunt. Basically, the game involves hiding faux pickles throughout the tree before decorating it. After opening gifts and stockings, the “kids” (all adults except for the grandchild) ransack my tree to see who can find the most pickles. Glass ornaments wouldn’t last a millisecond, lol! But the family loves the game and it’s a much looked forward to Christmas tradition at our house. But I missed having my beautiful glass ornaments out during the holidays. Then inspiration hit! If I wrapped garland around my light fixture, I could hang my ornaments from the fixture. It looks beautiful and the candle and twinkle lights reflecting off of the glass ornaments is magical.
