Small Bathroom Makeover and Organization Ideas

This post is sponsored by BEHR.  As always, opinions are 100% my own.

We have been working hard this month on getting things done in our basement makeover as part of the October Household Organization Diet.  As always, things are moving a little slower than expected and I still have a few more projects to do, but our basement bathroom refresh is now completed!

Inexpensive and simple design and organization ideas for a small bathroom.

The downstairs bathroom is pretty small but it does get quite a bit of use.  We have a special needs man that we often care for, and this is the bathroom that he uses when he is here.  He can be a little rough on it, so we keep things fairly simple but still want to have it looking nice.

Inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas.I’m sorry, but I’m a terrible blogger and forgot to take some good before pictures of the bathroom. I don’t know why I always forget that, but I did manage to find this photo from my archives.  It’s actually from a really old post so it’s not really the best picture, but it will still give you an idea of the before…

Basement bathroom makeover before photo.Although the walls kind of look green in the photo, they were actually more of a yellow color.  If you look at the wall color that you see in the reflection of the mirror, it will give you a more true representation of what it really looked like {and, no, there are not stripes on the wall – just strange shadows!}

Bathroom Makeover with BEHR dolphin fin.I have said it many times, but a fresh, new color of paint really does seem to change a room.  We went with BEHR Premium Plus Ultra in Dolphin Fin {790C-3}.  It’s a really pretty grey, and I liked that it didn’t have the blue/purple undertones that many grey paints have – it’s just a nice, true grey.  We still have to finish the baseboards up but will be doing those in BEHR Whisper White {HDC-MD-08}.  You can catch a sneak peak of it on our board and batten HERE.

Once the bathroom was painted, I just changed up a few of the accessories for a fresher look.  With a total budget of less than $100, I think it gives the room a whole new vibe.

Inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas.The bird print was just $5 and fit perfectly in an Ikea frame.  I also added some new soaps and a hand lotion {since I am constantly moisturizing my hands!}.  I picked these up at World Market and they smell amazing!

Inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas.The cabinet under the sink was hard to keep organized since it was filled with so much stuff so I wanted to add a little extra wall storage.  This wooden cubby has been waiting for a home for a while and now holds all of the larger bath towels. {Just in case you are wondering it holds three rolled up.}

Inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas.I had actually purchased this enamel BATH sign to put on the bathroom door but decided that it dressed up a rather plain front on the wooden bin.  I didn’t want to actually drill into the wood so I just used some faux nail head brads {from the scrapbook section at Michael’s} and stuck it on with command strips.

DIY Storage LadderIf you are looking to add some extra storage to your small bathroom, make sure that you are maximizing all of the space that you do have available.  Look for items that are both decorative as well as functional such as pretty wall baskets that you can hang on hooks on the wall or a simple wall storage ladder {like we used in our main floor bathroom above} to utilize that vertical space. If you have some floor space, you could even roll up your bath towels in a large basket or decorative bin.   And, of course, you always need a towel rack!

Inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas.By just clearing the bath towels out from the cabinet, it is now a much more organized space and everything thing is easily accessible.  I like to keep each of our bathrooms stocked with their own basic cleaning supplies so I can just quickly clean things up when I happen to be in there.  It is a definite time saver and makes cleaning a whole lot simpler!

Inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas.The inside of your cabinet doors is another area that you can gain a little extra storage space.  In all of our bathrooms I have a couple of command hooks to hold some cleaning cloths, but you can use the doors to hold other storage containers {like a make-up brush holder!} as well.

Inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas.Most of the personal care items are stored in the drawer below and I just purchased a new acrylic container to help keep everything a little more organized.

Inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas.I am excited to finally have the bathroom done – just one step closer to finally having our basement cleaned and organized!

    Ah to be able to change things in our bathroom. Want that leaning coral colored ladder for one thing. Really want that coral
    leaning shelved ladder. So much fun styling it as I do our shutter shelf in living room. American Family Furniture in Grand Junction has them for great price now and then. Always seem so to be wrong time when I see them on sale. Next time will get it no matter what and wait for right time.
    Your small bathroom room as you call it is quite cute i thought, great job. When people come over I worry what kind of shape our guest bath is in. It’s hubs job to clean it. I try to use our bathroom most of time,, ours is on back end of house and guest bath is on other end. We have a single wide mfg. home, 16×80, big enuf for two old people.
    Love your blog, enjoy week

    It looks awesome! We love the Dolphin Fin color – used it in the barn apartment and I like it so much we plan to use it in the new house, too!

    I love your idea of the fake nails and command strips! And the ladder for storing items and towels. I found this at Foodie FriDIY, and got some good ideas here.

    I’m in love with your bathroom makeover. My master bath is on the small side and it’s about to be completely redone. You’ve given me lots of great ideas, including that beautiful $5.00 print in the Ikea frame. I love it.
