Wood Planter Ideas

This year I am excited to be part of the Behr DIY Expert team and will be posting a new painting project every month featuring some of Behr’s amazing lines of interior and exterior paints.  Since I am working on organizing our outdoor spaces for this month’s Household Organization Diet, I thought that an outdoor project would be a good place to start.  If you are looking for some ways to spruce up your old wood planters, all you need is paint!

I was actually almost ready to get rid of this planter.  We have had it for about 8 years and the years of rain had taken its toll.  The cat has also used it for her personal scratching post and our Golden Doodle puppy thought that it was a pretty good chew toy as well.  As a result, two of the legs and many of the wooden boards along the bottom were in pretty rough shape.

Revive those old wood planters with paint!
Since I couldn’t find anything else that I liked to replace the planter, I decided to give some paint a try.  If you are looking to cover up old, weathered wood, you want to go with a darker, solid color to help hide all of the imperfections.  I chose the Behr Premium Solid Color Weatherproofing all-in-one wood stain and sealer in Atlantic.  This paint lasts for up to 10 years on decks and up to 25 years on fences and siding, so it will not be a project that I need to do again for a long while!

I gave the planter a light sanding prior to painting and smoothed out the damaged areas as much as possible.  I then did 2 coats of the paint.  It went on really smooth and dried in no time.  I was quite happy at how much the damaged wood was covered up and, once I turned the planter around {so the damaged areas were towards the back}, it was really hard to tell that there were any problem areas at all.  Fabulous!

I’m loving the extra color that the planter provides to our patio and can’t wait to show you the rest of the space!

It’s actually just nailed in. The clock is really light so it just needed one nail. 🙂

It”s not paint! It is solid colour stain. Stain penetrates the wood paint sits on top!
