Fall Simmering Potpourri Recipes

This fall simmering potpourri is an easy and natural way to add those delicious scents of fall to your home!

Pot of fall simmering potpourri with apples, pumpkins, and fall spices.

I’m always torn as summer starts to come to an end. While I’m always a little sad to say good-bye to those laid back summer days and beautiful summer weather, I absolutely LOVE decorating the house for fall. The change of colors is always so pretty and fall just feels like such a cozy season. One of my other favorite things about fall is all of the wonderful scents. The crisp fall air, the rich spices, fresh apples, ground cinnamon and cloves – I love them all!

Fall Simmering Potpourri

One of the quickest and easiest ways to get my house feeling like fall, is to make up some fall simmering potpourri.  It only takes a few minutes and it really does make the house smell heavenly.  It’s also kind of fun to experiment with different ingredients – so play around with what you have and see what you can come up with!

Apple slices, pumpkin, vanilla, cinnamon, apples, pumpkin spice, and apple cider for a heavenly smelling fall simmering potpourri.

I’ll give you a couple of my favorite recipes but don’t be too concerned with the measurements – I always seem to be playing around with it. 🙂

Pumpkin Spice Potpourri

  • 2 cups apple cider or apple juice {you could always use water too}
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tbsp. whole cloves
  • 1 tbsp. pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 an apple or dried apple slices

Pot of fall simmering potpourri with apples, pumpkins, and fall spices.

Apple Pie Potpourri

  • 1 small apple thinly sliced
  • 2 cups liquid {apple cider, apple juice, or water}
  • 1 tbsp. whole cloves
  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tbsp. nutmeg

Make your home smell like fall with these easy simmering potpourri.

For both recipes, add all of the ingredients to a small sauce pan and stir.  Bring to a gentle boil and then reduce heat to low. Continuously add more liquid {either cider or water} as needed and do not allow to dry up.  I’ll usually stir it up about once an hour to get the scent going.  You can also use a crockpot for the potpourri instead of the stove top method although you may need to increase the recipe size depending on the size of your crockpot.  I have also used the small dip-sized crockpot; however, I found that the scent was not as strong.

Make your home smell like fall with these easy simmering potpourri. Smells amazing!

I will re-use the mixture for up to a week until it’s either not looking too good or doesn’t smell as strong – just keep it stored in the fridge in an airtight container if you’re not using it.  You can add citrus peels or apple cores as well as the week goes on or top up the spices a bit.  I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do and hopefully it will put you in the fall spirit!

    Looked good enuf to eat, can only imagine how enticing it smells. The smells of Fall are part of favorite about the season. I get in mood to bake much more often in Fall and winter. The beautiful colors of Fall are another favorite part, wearing sweaters and boots too.
    Enjoy rest of week

    I love this idea! I’ve heard of dried potpourri before, but never even thought to make a “fresh” one like this! I like that it lasts and can be kept in the fridge when not in use. It’s absolutely perfect to get into the spirit of fall. Thanks so much for sharing this with us on #shinebloghop this week 🙂

    How much water do you typically add to this?

      I start with 2 cups of liquid {either water, juice or combo of} and then just keep adding it as needed so it doesn’t dry up. How much you will need to add depends on how long you have it on for and how high you have it set at. I’ve used the same mix for over a week, just adding the new liquid to it.

    I always have a small slow cooker going with simmering potpourri but I’ve never made a batch with pumpkin before. This is definitely happening at my house soon! Thank you for sharing your recipe with us at the Talk Of The Town party. Pinned 🙂

      It’s fun switching up the scents! I find that I notice it more when it’s not always the same. 🙂
