How to STAY Organized {The Household Organization Diet}

It's hard to believe that this is the last day in January!  I feel like I have had quite a productive month getting things organized around here and I have loved having so many of you join me for The Household Organization Diet. I have completed most items off of my January To Do list with the exception of a few cupboards that still need to be done and our windows that we are actually going to be replacing in a couple of weeks.

So now that you have invested so much time getting your kitchen cleaned and organized the real challenge is to keep it that way!  To maintain your results, you need to start developing new habits that you can slowly start to integrate into your daily lifestyle.  Here are a few things that you can start to work on:
  • Develop a daily cleaning routine.  This is the bare bones cleaning that should be done EVERY day.  Write it down and place it in your cleaning binder {see printable below}.  If you are a visual person, you might want to keep the list out and hang it on the inside of a cupboard door or closet that you use daily.
  • As much as possible, clean and tidy as you go.  This does require a bit of discipline when you first start but it really does make things so much simpler in the end. As things become routine, you hardly even have to think about it.
  • Have a 15 minute family clean up time before bed.  Get the whole family involved and go as quickly as you can during this time prioritizing what needs to be done first.  It really is amazing what you can get done.
  • I have found that if a space is truly organized, it should not require a lot of effort to keep it that way.  If you find that certain areas are quickly becoming disorganized again, re-evaluate the space.  Do you still have too much stuff?  Is there a way that you could optimize your space better?  Sometimes it takes a little trial and error to get things right.  Remember that organizing should be making things simpler!
  • As you work your way through each room each month, create a project list and write it down {see printable below}.   Keep it in your cleaning binder.  Come back to this list if you have some extra time or schedule it in if it is a priority for you.
  • Go through your monthly To-Do list and decide how often each task needs to be done.  If you want to wash your dishwasher on a monthly basis, add it to your monthly cleaning list.  If you want to clean your oven again in 6 months add it to the July To Do list so you won't forget.  If it is just going to be done on a yearly basis, there is no need to do anything as it is already on your January To Do list!
If you haven't started your cleaning binder yet, you can find the first post here.  The following printables can all be downloaded and printed to add to your binder.

Blank To Do Lists

So go and organize your binder and I'll show you some more pictures of my binder tomorrow.  If you are looking for more ideas on how to get organized you can check out this post with 30 more ways to get organized!

Tomorrow I will be hosting an Organization Link Party so you guys can show off all of the hard work that YOU have been doing!  Your links can be anything related to organizing {they do not necessarily have to relate to the kitchen} so get all of those organization ideas ready and come on back tomorrow morning!  I hope to see you then!

Pantry Organization {The Household Organization Diet}

Happy Monday! It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of January and in the last week of organizing our kitchens!  Hopefully you are starting to feel a little lighter and are motivated to continue on with The Household Organization Diet {we will be moving on to the bathrooms next month}.  If you haven't been able to complete everything, just focus on what you have been able to do and remember that there will be catch up times later on during the year to finish all of those tasks that you didn't have time for.
Okay, so today I will be talking about organizing your pantry {or in my case, lack thereof!}

Some of you may be lucky enough to have a nice dedicated pantry in your kitchen.  No such luck in our kitchen.  I have one corner cupboard {which is a pain to organize} that I have been using as our "pantry" for the past couple of years {you can see the original organization post here}.  Unfortunately, it just wasn't working.  It was bursting at the seams and always seemed to be a mess.  One of the main rules that I have found with organizing - if it is difficult to maintain organization, it is not properly organized!

So back to the drawing board...

No matter the size of your pantry, there are a few basic ideas that can keep any space looking clean and organized.

  • BINS AND BASKETS -Investing in some pretty and functional bins, baskets or canisters allows for a uniform look.  They can also be great space savers as they allow you to get rid of a lot of the bulky packaging that comes with most items.

Clear containers allow you to see what is in them and what you are running low on.  {These ones from Jaime Oliver are so cute!}.

Large baskets can store similar items and function as pull out drawers.

  • LABELS -Not only does it look great but it helps everyone know where things belong {and what is actually in there if you have removed the original packaging!}

{source: I Heart Organizing}
  • Grouping - Group similar food items together in order to simplify your cooking and baking needs and make things easier to find.
{source: BHG}
To organize your pantry:
  • Empty everything out of the pantry.
  • Throw away anything that may have gone bad or is expired.
  • Place everything that does not belong in a pantry off to the side {and find a new home for it at the end!}
  • Sort everything that is left into categories.  For example, you could put all of your baking products together, bags of snack foods together, grains together, all of your canned goods together, all breakfast items together, etc.  Do what will work for you.
  • Assess what you ideally need for storage containers.  DO NOT randomly run out to the store and buy the cutest bins you can find!  I like to purchase containers that I know I can add to later as my needs change and that come in a variety of sizes.  Measure your space first so you know what will fit.  Don't forget to shop around your own home too for baskets or bins that could be used to group boxed items or baking items together.
  • This may seem obvious, but store only what you have room for and will use in a reasonable amount of time.   If you like to bulk shop but have a small pantry, try leaving extra items in the basement, garage, or other area of your home with more storage until you need it.
***************

So, after all of that, here is what I ended up doing...

I have bought many different food storage containers over the years and have learned that you sometimes DO get what you paid for.  Cheaper bins are fine if you do not need them to be airtight for freshness but I have found that a lot of these either {a} do not keep food fresh or {b}easily warp over time making the lids harder to fit.  If you have kids that will also be going into these bins, you know that they need to be easy to take on and off if you have any chance of keeping those lids on!

I have been wanting these OXO bins for a long time, but since they are quite expensive, I have avoided purchasing them.  Well... I finally caved and started buying a bin or two each week when I grocery shopped.  {Costco also has a pretty good deal if you want to buy a whole set of them}.  They are air tight and super easy for the kids to take on and off - just pop 'em!  A couple of weeks ago, I also found these Better Homes and Garden ones at Walmart that were quite similar and a lot cheaper.

I ended up moving all of the dried goods out of the old "pantry" and into our Lazy Susan cupboard closer to the oven.  I actually already had a lot of food in there but the new storage containers freed up more space so I could fit everything in!

If you have cooking instructions that you want to keep {like with my pancake mix in the front}, just cut out the instructions from the box and place it inside the container.  You could also attach a plastic holder to the front on your container as well {like those stick on plastic business card holders} if you don't want it inside.  The bins in front on the bottom shelf are from Ikea and I use these to hold items that do not necessarily need to be stored in airtight containers {the crackers are still in their packaging}.

I also used a few baskets to store boxed foods and our huge Jello collection - I had no idea I had so many boxes in there!  :)

After that extra food was transferred over to the lazy susan cupboard, my old "pantry" area was much lighter and easier to keep organized.  Here's the top part of the cupboard...

...and the bottom part.

Happy Organizing!!

My Sunday Sparks - {Valentine's Edition}

Happy Sunday! I hope you guys have all been having a great weekend!  I have been feeling like my style routine has definitely been lacking lately {that may be a bit of an understatement} so I treated myself to a little makeover at Sephora yesterday.  It was kind of nice to feel like a girl again and I spent almost two hours in the store.  It was a nice contrast to the usual 3.5 minutes that I have in there when I have at least one of my kids in tow.  Now to see if I can reproduce any of the tricks that I was shown! :)

So are you ready to see some Creative Spark features?  There were so many fabulous ideas linked up and tons of amazing Valentine's Day Inspiration!

How cute is this box of fortune cookies from Paper Vine?  And even better - it's filled with date nights - one for each month!

These Valentine's Sour Cream containers from A Pumpkin and a Princess are so sweet!  Love the little clothes pins!!

If you are looking to keep things simple, check out Simply Klassic Home's beautiful mantel.  Easy and cute! {you can also find that awesome chalkboard printable over there!}

I am in love with these awesome love letters from Posh Pink Giraffe. Definitely on my To Do list!

This Starburst Valentine's Wreath from Chase the Star is so creative!  I love all of the different elements and the pop of turquoise.

Huckleberry Love used the same color scheme for this awesome felt heart garland.  This may be one sewing project that I could actually do!

Ode to Inspiration shows us how to stamp on cookies!  I had no idea!  I better go pull out all of my stamps and see what I have...

Isn't this Valentine's packaging idea from Echoes of Laughter adorable?  These would make wonderful neighbour or co-worker gifts.

These ombre heart trees from Before Meets After are so cute!  Love the scrabble Valentine too!

Great quote and fabulous printable from Sarah Dawn Designs.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to last week's party.  I really do appreciate each and every one of you!  Unfortunately I am unable to feature everyone's work so please head on over here if you haven't had a chance to check out the links.  For those of you that were featured here or on my Facebook page, feel free to grab a button from my sidebar.   Don't forget that you can also always find past features over on Pinterest on my Creative Spark Features board.

Valentine's Owl Cupcakes

Hey guys!  I hope you are all having a great week!  Just a really quick one for you today. I have been beat this week so no late night post writing for me!

Last weekend, the boys and I whipped up some cupcakes {from a box}.  I used some of them to create the Mini Baked Alaskas that I shared with you early in the week and then the boys and I decorated the rest. We started out nice and orderly and made some Valentine's Day owls to go with our owl treat boxes...

We just used chocolate wafer cookies for the wings and ears and mini Oreos for the base of the eyes.  The nose and pink part on the eyes are Smarties {These are the Canadian Smarties with chocolate - I'm not sure what the equivalent is in the States...}

Then the boys started to go a little crazy with the candies...

I have no will power and ate way too many goodies myself.  I was pretty much feeling like this by the end...

I'll be back tomorrow with another Household Organization Diet post on organizing the pantry {or lack there of!} Only one more week to go until the kitchen is done! :)

Photo Banner and Valentine's Day Chalkboard

Last weekend I figured that it was probably time to erase my Christmas chalkboard and get
 going on something for Valentine's Day. I decided to do something not too "Valentine's Dayish" because I know that it will probably be long past Valentine's Day when I get around to changing it! :)

The chalkboard is based on "Your Song" by Elton John - a favorite of mine that I used to sing to the boys when they were little.  The official words are "while you're in the world" but I always sang it to them this way.  Sorry Elton!

I always like to create a seasonal banner for the top of my chalkboard and, since Valentine's Day is all about celebrating our loved ones, I thought a photo banner would be cute.

It's pretty self-explanatory - I just cut some pennants from scrapbook paper {this is from Echo Park}, added some photos and a few embellishments and taped them up to some baker's twine.

It may be quite simple but now that it's done....

...this one's for you!

Have a wonderful day!

Welcome back to another night of The Creative Spark! I'm so excited to see what you all have been up to!

This week I have been continuing with the kitchen organization and cleaning.  I started out cleaning the dishwasher...

Mini Baked Alaskas {for Valentine's Day}

Hey guys! I have an easy little Valentine's Day treat to share with you today....

If you have been around here for a while, you know that I am not much of a baker {or cook!} but these guys were really fun and easy to make!

INGREDIENTS
  • 6 cupcakes {I am sure there is no surprise that I used a box mix!}
  • strawberry ice cream {or other favorite flavor}
  • 3 egg whites
  • 3/4 cup fine sugar
TO DO

  • Carefully slice off the top of the cupcakes and scoop out the inside.  I kept the cupcake liners on just to give the cupcake a little extra support - just don't forget to remove them later!
  • Spoon in ice cream and replace the top.  Freeze until firm {or ready to serve}.

  • Using an electric beater, whisk together the egg whites until soft peaks start to form.  Gradually add in the sugar and continue to whisk until it is thick and shiny.
  • Carefully remove the cupcake liners and spoon egg white mixture over the cupcakes until completely covered.
  • Place on a baking sheet and broil for approximately 1 minute or until the topping is golden brown.
  • Serve immediately.

 What a nice treat for your favorite Valentine!

  I hope you will share your ideas tonight at The Creative Spark.  See you there!
