The Creative Spark {No. 51}

Welcome back to another week of The Creative Spark!! I'm looking forward to seeing what you all have been up to!

I have had an Olympic day of cleaning around here.  I find it so hard to stick to a good schedule during the summertime and the house was definitely in need of some TLC.   Dusting done, bathroom cleaned, floors vacuumed and washed, and everything tidied... on one floor.  Still two more to go...

This week I finally got around to posting about Connor's preschool graduation party I know a lot of you are already thinking about back to school {yikes!!} but better late than never!

And since I know you all love organization projects, I also shared some tips on how to organize your car.

So now it`s your turn!!  What have you all been up to?  I can't wait to see what you have been working on! Feel free to link up anything that you have created - crafts, DIY, scrapbook projects, organization ideas, decorating, recipes - anything goes!

Organize Everything - How to Organize Your Car

I don't know about you guys but, for some reason, my car is always the last place I think of cleaning.   It's no wonder that it had turned into a giant mess.  The seats were stained, there was junk everywhere, and I don't even want to think of what fossilized food bits were lurking under the kids' booster seats.  My poor car was in bad shape and was in desperate need of a deep cleaning.  It was in such bad shape, that I actually took it in to have it professionally detailed.  Not good!!!

Given how disgusting my car was, I must say that the money spent on having it cleaned was definitely worth it but not something that I want to do again.

Thus "Project Car Organization" began...

Once I had my nice clean car back, there was a huge box of "stuff" remaining that the car detailers had collected from my car.  I went through everything and figured out what I needed to keep in the car and what had to be put away elsewhere.  Like organizing any other space, you need to get rid of what you don't really need or use.  If you are trying to figure out what items you should store in your car, keep a list in the car for a month and write down everything that you wished you had that you didn't.  At the end of the month, go through everything that is in the car and ask yourself if you really need those items that you didn't use throughout the month.

Okay, now you need to organize everything!!

PAPERWORK
My Jeep Liberty has the teeniest, tiniest, glove box ever.   Even my registration papers had to be jammed in there and they were constantly getting stuck in the back.  Trying to add any maps or other paper work in there was pretty much impossible.  So I ended up giving up on the glove box in favor of a folding file folder that I store under the front passenger seat.

I have a section for maps, insurance papers, the car CD manual, car receipts {such as oil changes}, coupons and trailer papers.  The file folder is from the Martha Stewart line at Staples and I picked it up when I found my planner.

Now that the glove box was freed up, I put in a dry cleaning sponge {this is great for dusting the dashboard}, an extra pair of sunglasses, and some pens and paper.

See?  I told you it was the smallest glove box ever!!!

KIDS ITEMS
We have a car DVD player that hangs from the front seat head rests.  I was initially reluctant to get one of these but it really is a sanity saver when we are going on long road trips.  There are actually two screens but, most of the time, the kids just watch on the same screen.  On the other head rest, I have a storage pocket for all of the other kids toys, games, books, snacks, etc. {and it also holds the second DVD screen}.  My kids are both huge talkers so they are usually much more interested in yakking our ears off than playing.  I think the toys are really much more for my benefit when I just need a little bit of quiet time.  If we are doing a bigger road trip the kids do bring a few more toys but, in general, they just have a couple of items each that are stored in the car on a regular basis.

The organizer bag is from The Container Store.  It actually looks like it is empty but there are really items in there!  The pockets are just nice and deep.

ODDS 'N ENDS
Okay, now those odds 'n ends items.  This is where I really narrowed things down. Here is my must have list:
  • moist wipes for my crazy, messy children {also great for quickly wiping down the dashboard if I am waiting in the car}
  • anti-bacterial spray which I use daily for work
  • a little lipstick for those days that I have to run out of the house without makeup {this happens way too often!}
  • my USB cable so I can play my iphone tunes
  • a place to hold my quarter and loonie for shopping carts {I keep the change in an empty medicine bottle}
  • little garbage bags {I use those rolls of small garbage bags that are supposed to be used to hold dirty diapers - perfect car size!}
  • my dollar store back rest.  Best dollar spent ever!
  • sunglasses

Everything fits in the middle console or the cup holder organizer that I picked up at The Container Store.

I also have a sunglasses holder that is clipped above my sun visor.  I have really light sensitive eyes and it can switch from rain to sun and back again many times throughout the day around here!

 {Okay, I really should have cleaned those glasses while I was at it!}

EMERGENCY ITEMS
I have a bag of jumper cables and some basic repair tools {not that I would know how to use them!} that are stored underneath our floor mat in the trunk.  I also keep six bottles of water, some granola bars, a flashlight, and a couple of blankets in a bin in the trunk for a little emergency kit.  There is also an air compressor, an umbrella, and a few little parts for our tow bar that are stored in there as well.

 I have two first aid kits - one with more basic, frequently used supplies {band-aids, Polysporin, anti-bacterial wipes, tweezers, Tylenol, After Bite, etc.)  and one with less used items such as larger bandages and gauze, a triangle bandage, an emergency blanket, scissors, etc.

If you remember my Boo Boo Box from last summer, this is just a simplified version.  I'll usually add a few more items before we leave for a camping trip.

Now that the car is cleaned and organized, there is just a minute or two of daily maintenance to keep it that way.  I am also trying to make sure I schedule in a little extra cleaning time about once per month.

 MONTHLY CLEANING

STEP ONE - Clear out to the car.
Grab a garbage bag and two bins - one for things that are to stay in the car and one for things that do not belong in the car.  Work your way through your car tossing the items into the appropriate bins.  Remove car seats and shake out any removable car rugs.  Once your car is organized, this step should be really quick!

STEP TWO - Vacuum
Get out your vacuum {or handheld} and any little attachments that it may come with.  I have a long skinny attachment {that is great for getting into those little spaces} and I mini vacuum attachment that connects to the hose.  Vacuum down floors, removable rugs, and upholstery.

STEP THREE - Wipe and Clean
Dashboard and other rubber or vinyl surfaces - I use a water bottle to spray down all of the surfaces and then wipe them down with a Norwex microfiber cloth.  If you have added grime that you need to remove you can make a paste with baking soda and water and use a small scrub brush {or toothbrush} to get into all of those little spaces.  Once everything is clean, I give the plastic and rubber surfaces a final wipe using Armor All spray for a little extra shine.

Upholstery and carpet - The Norwex cloths can also be used to remove minor stains from the upholstery.  For deeper stains, I use a mixture of dish detergent and water and a stiff brush.  Funny enough, the worst stains that I have had to remove on my upholstery have just been plain old water marks.

Mirrors and Glass -  I use water and a Norwex window cloth to clean the mirrors and glass.  I have also heard that the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work great on the front headlights although I haven't actually had to try this.

Now that things are more clean and organized, I can't believe that I spent so much time driving around in such a messy car!  Two months later and things are still looking good!

 Does anyone else have any great car organization tips to share?  I would love to hear them!

Happy organizing!!  Have a great week!

My Sunday Sparks {No. 50}

Wow! I can't believe that it is Sunday already! This week has just flown by!  I don't think I am meant to be a full time working girl and will be happy to be back to my regular three days per week schedule.  On a positive note, I am SO excited that the Olympics have started and spent yesterday getting into the Olympic spirit.  As much as I love all of the events, I think my favorite part of the broadcasts is hearing all of the amazing stories behind the athletes.  Tear jerkers for sure! Have you guys been watching?  What are your favorites?

So in between swimming, rowing and gymnastics, I am just popping in today for a quick "hello" and to show off some of the fabulous projects that were linked up at last weeks Creative Spark.  If you haven't had a chance to check out the links, head on over here.

Isn't this summer ice cream album from Papervine the cutest thing ever?  Such a fun album to showcase some of your favorite summertime photos.

Speaking of cute, Johnny and a Dress created these beautiful burp cloths. They would make such a unique baby gift.

I love this easy and inexpensive DIY outdoor rug from Four Marrs and One Venus.  30 minutes and one could be all yours!

Alderberry Hill showed off her fabulous house sign.  What a welcoming entrance!

I always like to end each feature post with a yummy treat but this week I picked a healthy yummy treat!  This tabbouleh from Hello Paper Moon will definitely be on my menu plan for next week!

Thanks so much to everyone who came out and joined in the party last week!  I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it and how wonderful I think you all are!  For those of you that were featured here or on my Facebook page, feel free to grab a button from my sidebar.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend and I will be back on Monday with a little organization project.  Well, unless I get sucked into all of the Olympic coverage...

Preschool Graduation Party

Last month my little guy graduated from preschool.  I still can't believe that he will be going to Kindergarten in September but I am slowly trying to get myself used to the idea.  Am I seriously old enough to have two kids in elementary school?

Since Connor's preschool didn't have a graduation celebration, I thought that I would throw one at our place.  I kind of think that this is a pretty big milestone for a five year old.  You only graduate from preschool once!
Remember the graduation invitations that I posted about last month?
Well, I am finally getting around to posting the rest of the party!

We ended up having nine little graduates and their families over so I am happy that the weather actually cooperated for us and we could spend the majority of the party outside.  One hour after the party was over, the skies darkened, a torrential downpour started, and our power went out.  It must have been fate!

I purchased most of the party decorations from Oriental Trading and picked up the graduation sign at Target.

I also found some cute printable tags from Lil Luna and added them to the straws.

Our drink station consisted of lemonade and Connor's favorite punch {Sprite and raspberry frozen yogurt}

We had the basic snacky party food outside {chips, fruit plate, and veggie plate} but kept the majority of the desserts inside.  I decorated the cake with a cute pennant printable that I found over on Paging Supermom.

I also printed a larger one out to decorate the hutch and just added some red scrapbook paper behind it with baker's twine.

The kids got to take home a "class ring"{ring pops}, some graduation bubbles, some gummy treats, one of the graduation owls, and a graduation beach ball.

We did the actual graduation ceremony outside complete with Pomp and Circumstance and the kids all took turns walking down the aisle in their caps to get their medals {also order from Oriental Trading Company}.  I tried to get some pictures of them all at the end and as they were throwing their caps in the air but they didn't turn out too well. They all still looked super cute!

I also printed out the Preschool Graduate sign from Paging Supermom and took individual pictures of the kids with them holding the sign {see Connor's picture above - not his most photogenic moment!}

I am so glad that Connor had such a great preschool experience and had the chance to meet some wonderful friends.  He misses all of his buddies already but is ready for the new challenge ahead {even if his Mommy isn't!}

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Fun and Easy Picnic Lunch

Hello! I hope your week has been going well! My {new} computer caught a nasty virus just before we left for our vacation.  Things have not been the same ever since I returned and she is now on life support and will not even boot up. I have my fingers crossed that the computer doctor will be able to fix her as I now have no access to my main email or blog photos.   Please bear with me as I try to come up with some last minute blog posts!

On Friday the boys and I are going to be heading off to the beach and spray park for a little picnic {weather permitting!}.   When I pack up picnic food, I try to keep things relatively healthy while still trying to find things that the boys like and can eat on the go.  Seriously, they will rarely sit down to eat for more than a couple of minutes at a time when there are so many more important things to do!

To make things easier to pack up {and more fun to eat!}, I made up a couple of these picnic lunch boxes.

They make the perfect kid-size lunch kit.

MATERIALS
  • Plastic bead organizer with interchangeable dividers.   I picked up mine from Michaels.  They are regularly priced at $6.99 so they are pretty reasonable if you use a coupon.
  • Scrapbook Paper {double sided is easiest as the backside will show through on the inside of the box}.  The paper and embellishments are all from various Echo Park lines.
  • Clear glue.
  • Modge podge.
  • Yummy snacks!! {I also addded a mini hand sanitizer, a napkin, and a funky "spork" - spoon on one end, fork on the other}
Create the cover for your box from the scrapbook paper and add any embellishments that you would like.   Remember that the underside of the cover will show through your box when it is open so decorate both sides.  To make it more durable, keep things fairly simple without any added dimension.  Using a foam brush, apply a couple of coats of Modge Podge to seal.

For the food, just freeze a yogurt tube {and/or the drink box} to help keep things cool.  The temperatures around here don't usually get too crazy, but if it is especially hot where you are you can just place the box in a cooler.  I used little medicine boxes{from the dollar store} tucked in beside the yogurt tube to hold dip for the carrots and some hummus for the crackers.

Here is what we filled ours with: 1 fruit and veggie juice box, rice crackers {with hummus in medicine container}, whole wheat pretzels, blueberries, cheese stick, yogurt tube, carrots {and dip in a medicine container} and some Mike and Ikes {you gotta have some candy!}.

If you are looking for other ways to use these handy bins, you can check out a couple of my other posts here and here.

Now if only this was what our picnic spot would look like things would be perfect...
Oh well.  I'm sure hundreds of screaming wet kids running around will be just as relaxing.

How to Connect With Your Kids

Hello everyone! I hope you have been having a great week! Now that we are officially on summer vacation {yippee!}, I have a little more time to spend chilling out with the boys.  I know we all say it but, man, do kids ever grow up fast!!  Connor will be off to Kindergarten in September and it is kind of hitting me hard.  As wonderful as it is to watch them grow older I do miss the younger years some times.

I have been spending a lot of time thinking over the past couple of weeks what to do with the kids over our summer vacation.  I will still be working 3 days per week but that still leaves me an extra two days to spend with the kiddos.  When I am planning things to do with the kids, I can sometimes get a little caught up in the planning stages and not enough time actually doing and enjoying.  This summer I am hoping to spend more time on the simpler things and being more intentional when I am with them.

I have put together a list of simple things that can be done easily on a daily basis to show my kids how much I love them and how special they are.    Many {if not all!} of these ideas are not anything earth shattering but serve as a reminder of how I want my relationship with my children to be.  Let me start by saying that this is my ideal way to parent and I know that there will be times that life's stresses may get in the way.  All of these ideas may not all work for you and your family but hopefully they will give you a little boost in those crazy times!

Always remember that you are enough.
Yes, it is true. Our children just need us. They do not need a fancy vacation or the most expensive toy in the store. They do not need us to do all of those fabulous projects on Pinterest that we have pinned to do with them {and I have a ton!}. They just need us to love them, spend time with them, and listen to them. Really. Even at the end of long day, 15 minutes of uninterrupted, completely-devoted-to-them time goes a long way. If we can remember one thing, let's remember this!

Create special traditions with your kids.
Traditions will long be remembered by your children and give them something to look forward to and count on. Remember that traditions are not only for holidays and special occasions - have one night per week that the kids pick the meal or create a "Fun Friday" tradition that every Friday night you do something together as a family. Just be creative! If your children are a little older, let them come up with their own tradition ideas.

Eat family meals together.
Yes, we have all heard how important it is to eat together as a family. This can sometimes be challenging to accomplish with work schedules and kids activities but we do try to do this as much as possible. Dinner is a great time to encourage conversations. Have everyone share the best {and even the worst!} parts of their day. If you can't all eat together at dinner, have a family dessert a little later in the evening {there's nothing like a little treat to get our kids to open up!}

Do little things with great love.
I saw this on a church bulletin board one day and loved this saying. It really is quite remarkable how little things can make such a big impact on our kids. Add some chocolate chips to their pancakes as a special treat one morning, let them stay up a little later to play a fun game with you, or stop at the park unexpectedly on the way home from grocery shopping.  Let them know that you did it because you love them.  It is amazing how much this will mean to them.

{source}

Be affectionate towards your kids often.
There is not really anything better than a great big heart felt hug and kiss from one of your kids and I think we all try to soak this up for as long as possible.  Kisses, hugs, Eskimo kisses, holding hands, big bear hugs, back rubs, cuddles in bed - there are many different ways to show affection.   Find out what your child likes best.  For many kids, big bear hugs can be very calming.  For kids that don't want to kiss, an Eskimo kiss or blowing kisses are great alternatives.  My oldest is not a big cuddler, so we have this routine where we will touch our foreheads together for our "kiss".  Remember to thank your kids for their affection and tell them how much you enjoy this.

Go on a date.
Take your child out on a "date" every now and then. If they are a little older, involve them in picking out the activity. It could be a dinner out at a favorite restaurant, an afternoon spent at the park, or a trip to the zoo. It would also be fun to surprise them with their date - show up at school unexpectedly to pick them up or leave them clues through the week to have them try to guess where you are going.

Make time to listen.
Now really, kids do say the funniest things!  Other times though, we have to listen to the same stories over and over again.  But you know what?  You never know when that story might change.  And you don't want to miss it!  Remember that these thoughts are important to our little ones and will establish a good connection for further conversations {think teenage years...} Take the time to really listen.

{source}

Write down their stories.
I have a little journal that I created to write down funny stories or other memories that I wanted to remember.  Now, when one of my kids says something funny, they will often ask if I am going to write it down in my book {or post it on Facebook!}  This will be a fun book to look back on with the kids when they are a little older and really shows them that I value what they say.

Play physical games.
Yes, I know that at the end of a long day it is much easier to show our affection by a quiet cuddle on the couch. But kids love to play and they love it when we play with them. Chase your kids, spin them around, "fight" over them, play wrestle. There is no equipment required! Although there are many benefits of roughhousing, the biggest benefit is the fun and giggles that it creates!

Let go of your need to be right.
Oh, this is a hard one for me! I tend to be on the controlling side so it is sometimes hard to remember that my way is not the only right way! Let them explore and find their own way. Talk about what worked and what didn't.

Write notes to your kids telling them how much you love them.
Write little notes for your kids and leave them in unexpected places - a sticky note on the mirror, a note in their lunchbox, or a little message placed at their bedside to see when they wake up. I also write a love letter once per year {I do mine on their birthdays but I have heard of others doing them on Mother's Day or at the beginning of each year} sharing my thoughts on the year that has past, what I love about them, and all of their accomplishments that they have achieved.

I picked up these little notes from the dollar bin at Target.  They have a cute little saying on the front and some room to write a note on the back - "Today I love you because..."

Have a bedtime ritual.
Every night at bedtime, we lay down with each of the kids and talk about the day and what they have planned for the next day. It is a great time to get the kids to talk as they are generally more relaxed. I get way more information out of them during this time than I do the whole day and it can make for some interesting conversations! {If you are looking for more specific questions that you can ask, there are some fun ones here.}

Try "time ins"
You know when your kids start to get really whiny? And you really just want them to go away? Try taking a little time out of whatever you are doing and spending 5-10 minutes with them to work on some calming activities. Cuddle and read a book, just sit and chat, or play a quiet game with them. Often, if I can give the kids a little extra attention right when they are starting to misbehave, I can get them back on track and avoid future melt downs.

Remember old memories.
My kids love looking through their old scrapbooks or listening to a story about something funny they did when they were little.  Creating a scrapbook does not have to be anything fancy - really it is just pictures and some journaling {you can check out my easy Scrapbook method here} Even if you no longer print your pictures out, sit down at the computer with the kids and look through old photos. Bedtime is also a great time to recall favorite memories. It is fun looking back and it helps our kids remember all of the great memories that we have created.

 {source}

Limit Screen Time.
This one might be the most obvious one, but can often be the biggest culprit of them all! Be clear about the amount of time that the kids can spend using the computer, video games, or television so you do not have to have a battle everyday. Sometimes, screen time can work to your advantage though. If you have older kids, sit down with them and have them explain their video games to you {I know my kids think it is pretty funny how bad I am!}. Or have a show that you watch together as a family. My little guy loves watching Wipeout and we get quite a few laughs out of this!

Take some time for yourself.
Our lives can't completely revolve around our children. I know this can be hard, but don't feel guilty to take some time off away from your children. A happier Mommy really does make for happier children. The more connected and focused you are with your children during the times you are together, the easier it should be to take some time away from yourself {and this doesn't have to be at 11:00 at night!}.

Praise your kids often.
Focus on the strengths of your children and praise them for all of their accomplishments.  Get excited when they do something that they are proud of.
Watch your kids sleep.
There is nothing sweeter than watching your child sleep.  I find this particularly helpful at the end of those "trying" days!  They always look so sweet cuddling their stuffies and all curled up in their beds - any left over frustration towards them always seems to disappear.  The kids love seeing pictures that I have taken of them sleeping or hearing what position I found them in when I came to kiss them in at night {they are often sideways, sprawled out starfish style, or turned around backwards in their beds}

Send them mail.
Now who doesn't love to receive actual mail?  Write up a little letter and send it off!

Make food fun!
It is amazing how much my kids love it when I make something out of food.  It does not even have to be anything particularly creative or difficult.  Kids are pretty easy to impress!  Connor loves to make "Mr. Tortilla Heads" {from Toy Story 3} with a tortilla and a variety of veggies and cheese for all of the body parts and Matthew loves "Banana Ghosts" {half a banana with chocolate chips for the eyes}  These apple frogs are also a favorite around our house.  Try mixing things up and have breakfast for dinner or dessert first.

Have a secret love word or nickname.
I don't know what it is about nicknames, but a special name that is just between you and your child creates a special bond.  My Dad always called me "Pooch" when I was growing up.  Although I would never allow anyone else to call me this, it was somehow endearing coming from my Dad.  You can also come up with a special word or saying to use in place of "I Love You".  The kids and I always say "Elephant Juice" since it looks like you are saying "I love you" if you watch your lips.

Get outside.
Take your kids out to the park or for a nature hike.  Kids love to explore and there are so many new experiences that you gain in the great outdoors.  It is a great time to connect with your kids away from cell phones, video games and the T.V.

Have a parting routine.
Have a special routine that you do every time you leave your kids.  Try to know at least one thing that they will be doing while you are gone so you can ask them about it when you get back.  Have a special good-bye that you do  - it could be a funny kiss or hug or a specific saying that you have.  The whole "See you Later Alligator" is always fun and we like to play around with these answers {"Better Swish Jellyfish" is my personal fav!}

Read to and with your kids.
I try and read with the kids at least 30 minutes per day.  For us, it is usually just before bedtime but, depending on the ages of your kids and your schedule, anytime during the day works.  Pick a comfy reading spot where you can cuddle up together.  Take turns picking out and reading stories.  Even the younger kids who can't yet read can look at the pictures of a familiar book and tell a story.

{source}

Show your child how to do something.
In general, it is usually much quicker {and easier!} to do something for our kids rather than taking the time to actually show them how to do it. Take some extra time and have your child craft along with you or join you in the kitchen to create a meal. Even some basic household chores can be more fun if you do it together. It can be a great learning experience for our children and provide some meaningful bonding time at the same time!

Let go of how you thought it was going to be.
Many, many times, the day I had envisioned in my mind does not turn out as planned. Try and go with the flow - the kids probably won't know any different.  Remember that it is the time that you are spending with them that is important - not the activity.

Have a home campout with your kids.
Kids love camping but sometimes it can be hard to actually get away.  Plan a campout in your backyard {or even in your living room!} and do all of the fun camping activities that you would normally do - sleep in a tent, have a fire, enjoy some camping food, stay up late and look at the stars.  Make sure you leave the electronics behind.  Oh, and don't forget the smores!

{source}
Incorporate family time weekly.
Set a regular time each week to do a family activity - play a game, go bowling, or try a new activity.  Time just seems to disappear on us if we do not have a specific time set.  Sit down and write out a big list of activities that you would like to do and take turns each week picking the activity.

Laugh and be silly with your kids.
I think this is probably the best way for our kids to think that we are pretty cool.  Share some jokes together and take some time to just be silly!

Say I Love You.
Well, you can't get much simpler than this.  Tell your child you love them as much as possible and at unexpected times. {And even when you're mad!}  I know actions speak louder than words but you just can't go wrong with an "I Love You"!

Remember that is the connections that we create with our children that are important and that it is the quality of the time that we spend with them that they will remember.  So take some time this summer to slow down and enjoy some simple moments with your kids.  The payoff will be well worth it!

By the way, I'll Love You Forever by Robert Munsch is an absolute must read with your kids.  I cry EVERY time!!!

So what do you do to connect with your kids?  I'd love to hear your ideas!
